Transmission management system (TMS)

A transmission management system, commonly called a TMS, is a suite of software tools used by system operators to monitor and manage the transmission system. Features of a TMS include security analysis tools for monitoring stable operations as well as tools for developing and implementing strategies to cope with system disturbances and emergencies. A TMS is also used for scenario analysis and for training operators to deal with disturbances and emergencies.

Typical components of a TMS include:

  • Operating training/simulation

  • Transient stability analysis

  • Contingency analysis

  • State estimation

  • Optimal power flow analysis

  • Voltage stability analysis

  • Short circuit analysis

A TMS is a component of the energy management system (EMS) used for transmission operations and generation dispatch.
