Capital expenditure

A utility capital expenditure refers to money spent to buy or build assets with a life expectancy of longer than one year. Typical capital assets for energy companies include power plants, pipelines, transmission lines, distribution lines, compressor stations, electric substations, and customer-related equipment such as meters. Capital expenditures are especially important for utilities because the value of these assets is a primary factor in determining the utility’s authorized return.
