Carbon negative refers to an entity or a process that has a net effect of removing greenhouse gases from the atmosphere. To achieve carbon negative status, an entity or process must remove more greenhouse gases from the atmosphere than the entity or process emits.
Examples of processes that may be considered carbon negative include:
Manufacture of building materials that sequester carbon
Use of biofuels coupled with carbon capture and storage
Removing greenhouse gases from the air through atmospheric carbon capture fueled by zero carbon electricity
